Sohag: within the northern half of the path

For eclipse planning, the relevant location is the precise observing site rather than the city name alone. A site south of central Sohag may gain time compared with one farther north, provided both have suitable access and an unobstructed view.
Asyut: closer to the northern edge
Asyut is inside the northern portion of the totality path, but its position nearer the boundary reduces totality to roughly 2 minutes 30 seconds. That remains a true total eclipse, including visibility of the corona when the solar photosphere is fully covered.
However, being nearer an edge leaves less margin for location errors. Observers should verify the coordinates of their chosen site against an up-to-date path map rather than relying on a general city label.
Hurghada: Red Sea totality, but shorter
Hurghada receives approximately 2 minutes 45 seconds of totality. It may appeal to travellers already using the Red Sea coast, but its eclipse duration is notably shorter than Luxor's because it is away from the centreline.
The coastal setting also differs operationally from the Nile Valley. Local cloud, haze, wind, transport routes and the direction of the morning Sun should all be assessed for a specific site. A beach address is not automatically an ideal observing position if buildings or terrain restrict the relevant horizon.
Duration is only one part of choosing a site
A centreline location usually maximises totality, but a workable observation plan also needs space, access and contingencies. When comparing Luxor, Aswan, Sohag, Asyut and Hurghada, consider:
- Exact coordinates: published city durations are approximations, not guarantees for every address.
- Clear sightlines: trees, buildings, ridges and temporary structures can obstruct the Sun.
- Weather planning: historical climate patterns are useful but cannot predict conditions on the day.
- Road access: eclipse traffic can make short transfers much slower than usual.
- Site control: managed entry, toilets, shade and drinking water matter during a summer observation session.
- Equipment safety: certified solar filters are required throughout the partial phases.
Ordinary sunglasses are not safe for viewing the partial eclipse. Solar filters must meet the relevant safety standard and be used according to the manufacturer's instructions. Optical equipment needs correctly fitted filters at the front aperture. Filters are removed only during totality and replaced before the bright solar surface reappears.
