Six minutes of totality is a long time by eclipse standards and a very short time to fumble with gear. Egypt adds its own variables: fine desert dust, 40°C+ heat, and a Sun almost directly overhead. Here is what to bring and how to use it.
Eye safety: non-negotiable rules
- Use only ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers.
- Inspect for scratches or pinholes before every use; discard damaged filters.
- Never look through a camera, binoculars or telescope while wearing eclipse glasses — the optics concentrate sunlight and burn through the filter.
- Glasses off only during totality, back on the moment the diamond ring returns.
- Supervise children continuously through the partial phases.

Camera kit that works in Upper Egypt
- Front-mounted solar filter sized to your lens — never a rear screw-in "sun" filter.
- 200–400mm telephoto on full frame for a framed corona; 100–200mm if you want prominences plus context.
- Sturdy tripod with a head that can point near-vertically — the Sun is ~73° high at maximum.
- Intervalometer or remote release so your hands stay off the camera.
- Spare batteries and cards, plus a rocket blower and sealed bags for dust.
- A second, wide camera left running on the landscape and the crowd.

Rehearse the filter-off / bracket / filter-on sequence at home until it takes under ten seconds. Then, during totality, run it once and spend the remaining minutes looking up. Nobody has ever regretted watching more and shooting less.
Desert-specific notes
Keep gear bagged until you set up; Nile-valley dust finds every seam. Shade the camera body between phases — sensors in direct August sun heat quickly and add noise. Carry more water than you think you need, and a light long-sleeve layer: you will be stationary in the open for over an hour before first contact.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need eclipse glasses in Egypt?
Yes. Every phase except the 6 minutes of totality requires ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses. Sunglasses, exposed film and smoked glass are not safe at any point.
Can I buy eclipse glasses in Luxor?
Do not count on it. Certified stock in Upper Egypt will be scarce and counterfeits are common around major eclipses. Bring your own from a reputable supplier; our guests also receive certified glasses on arrival.
When can I take my glasses off?
Only during totality itself, between second and third contact, once the last bead of sunlight disappears. Put them back on the instant the diamond ring reappears.
Do I need a solar filter for my camera?
Yes, for all partial phases. A front-mounted ISO-certified solar filter is required on any lens or telescope. Remove it for totality, then refit before third contact.
What camera settings work for totality?
Bracket widely. At ISO 200 and f/8, exposures from 1/1000s to 1 second capture everything from the inner corona to outer streamers. Manual focus set on the crescent before totality, then untouched.
Can I photograph the eclipse with a phone?
Phones capture the darkened landscape and horizon glow beautifully, but not corona detail. Use a phone for the scene, a filtered telephoto for the Sun, and spend most of totality watching with your own eyes.
